Mr. Jackson, who represents Chicago’s South Side, had weight-loss surgery in 2004. His statement released on Friday raises the possibility that his procedure may be linked to his current condition and that it may be becoming more complicated.

“Certainly some people do, as part of their depression or anxiety disorder, manifest it with gastrointestinal symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea,” Matthew Lilly, a psychiatrist in Rochester, Minn., who did a yearlong fellowship at Mayo in 2010 before going into private practice, told the Associated Press.

 

“But for them to even comment on that would, to me, sound as if it’s a significant issue and not just a mild symptom associated with his illness,” he said.

Mr. Jackson’s statement, released through the hospital, is the most extensive information he has provided to the public since he took medical leave on June 10. His absence went largely unnoticed for two weeks, and then his staff said only that he was being treated for exhaustion without saying where. Later, they added that his condition was more serious and that he was being treated for a mood disorder.

The limited information contained in such statements prompted calls for Mr. Jackson to be more forthcoming. The Mayo Clinic’s statement didn’t say anything about his previous whereabouts, but the Chicago Sun-Times, citing unnamed sources, said that on Wednesday he left Tucson, Ariz., and flew to Minnesota in a private plane.

 

Mr. Jackson, who was first elected in 1995, is facing re-election in November. He is the subject of a House Ethics Committee investigation into allegations that his friend, Raghuveer Nayak, offered former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich as much as $6 million in campaign contributions in 2008 to appoint Mr. Jackson to fill the U.S. Senate seat vacated by President Barack Obama.

Mr. Nayak was arrested in June on unrelated charges. Mr. Jackson hasn’t been charged and has denied any wrongdoing.

The allegations that Mr. Jackson tried to buy a U.S. Senate seat were followed by revelations about an extramarital affair Mr. Jackson had with a Washington, D.C., waitress. Earlier this month, Mr. Jackson’s mother, wife of famed civil-rights leader Jesse Jackson, said her son had fallen short of his own expectations and was depressed.
